Capitalism and Climate Change

Though many believe that climate change poses a grave danger to the future of human civilization, the international mobilization to address this global challenge is fraught by political, ideological and organizational problems. In this seminar, we will explore aspects of global climate politics and global climate governance by focusing on their economic roots and implications: global capitalism, the neoliberal world order, consumer society, the dominance of transnational corporations, the economic conflict among global North and South, and the effort to institute global governance arrangements that can redirect economic activity along sustainable lines. Throughout the semester the students will work on personal research projects, which will explore various issues of concern, such as the relations between climate change and economic development, the political economy of the clean energy transition; corporate environmentalism, greenwashing, and climate lobbying; the role of the global financial sector in climate action; and the prospects of reaching global net zero GHG emissions by 2050. The seminar is inclusive of diverse disciplines and theoretical approaches in the social sciences, including environmental sociology, political economy, environmental management, governance theory, science and technology studies, and more.

Issues in Labor & Globalization

This English language course discusses some main issues arising from the nexus between post-1980 globalization processes and the world of labor. The course begins by acquainting the students with some main aspects and derivatives of economic globalization including the globalization of trade and finance, the neoliberal turn, multinational corporations, supply and value chains, international trade agreements, and global governance. It proceeds to examine the implications of the above on the global division of labor, the emergence of new forms of work and employment, labor migration across borders, the adaptation of organized labor within and between nations, and trends in labor rights and conditions. Students’ obligations include attendance in classes, submission of 2 short papers throughout the course, and a final exam.

Sociological theories: from the classic period to the present

The course provides a panorama of pathbreaking theories from the 19th-century beginnings of modern sociology to recent developments. The first classes will review the fathers of sociology, the problems they identified, and the theories they developed to address those problems. Then we will proceed from puzzle to puzzle and theory to theory, while drawing lines of change and continuity between classical and contemporary sociological thought, and elucidating areas of agreement and dispute among thinkers. The course will help us to systematically think about, among other issues, the foundations of social existence, the nexus between social structure and free choice, social reproduction vs. change, modernity and capitalism, the relation between ideas and action, and about power and control in the context of class, gender and ethnic-racial relations. Student requirements include active participation in the classes, a mid-term paper, and a final exam.

Work: An Introduction

The course attacks the concept of labor from a broad interdisciplinary perspective, in order to establish an introductory understanding of labor as a life sphere, human need, economic practice, social and national issue, a site of class and gender struggle, and more. The goal is to mirror labor's multiple meanings and implications for a host of social and research problems, thus demonstrating the logic of and challenges facing labor studies as a multi-disciplinary research area. In this course we will discuss classical and contemporary writing on labor, from the social sciences, humanities, prose literature and the arts.

Capitalism, Society and the Environment

Money makes the world go round. Capitalism is the single most important shaping factor of world history in the last 200 years—of modernity and globalization themselves, of stratification, culture, power relations, social change and other fundamental structures and dynamics of social life. This is why leading social-scientific explanations to social, cultural, and environmental trends and problems—such as poverty, inequality, war, peace, opioids use, social networks, or global warming—start from the capitalistic logic and dynamics of expansion. The course visits selected moments in capitalism’s development in time and space, with an emphasis on its social and environmental implications. We will pass through the roots of capitalism, the rise of corporate capitalism, the turn to late capitalism, and the deployment of present-day global capitalism. Along that, we will talk about mass society, stratification, organizations, work, culture and climate change. Classical and contemporary theories will inform our journey, with Karl Polanyi’s double movement thesis as the starting point.

Corporate responsibility and human resources management in a globalized world

This mini course discusses the rise of private forms of socio-economic global governance in recent decades, with an emphasis on their relationship to economic globalization, multinational corporations, and the global diffusion of practices of “corporate social responsibility” (CSR). The CSR phenomenon is then evaluated in light of its potential to contribute to, or rather undermine, pro-social governance effects. The rest of the course zooms in on various aspects of the nexus between CSR and labor, including: CSR and transnational supply chains, CSR and labor unions, and CSR and the control of employees.

קורס מרוכז זה סוקר את עלייתן של צורות מופרטות לא-מדינתיות של ממשליות (governance) כלכלית-חברתית גלובלית בעשורים האחרונים, עם דגש על הקשר שלהן לגלובליזציה כלכלית, תאגידים רב-לאומיים, וההתפשטות הגלובלית של פרקטיקות של ״אחריות תאגידית״. בהמשך לסקירה הנ״ל, הקורס עובר להתחבט בשאלה האם אחריות תאגידית תורמת לפיקוח חברתי על תאגידים בשם ההגנה על זכויות עובדים וזכויות אדם, או לחילופין מסכלת אותו. לבסוף נבחן מספר הבטים של הקשר בין אחריות תאגידית לעבודה, וביניהם: אחריות תאגידית והממשליות של שרשרות אספקה טרנס-לאומיות, היחסים בין אחריות תאגידית וארגוני עובדים, והשימוש באחריות תאגידית לצורך שליטה בעובדים. הציון בקורס ינתן על סמך מטלת בית מסכמת.
